Background:
Every minute a woman dies in pregnancy or childbirth worldwide, over 500,000 every year. And every year over one million newborns die within their first 24 hours of life for lack of quality care. Maternal mortality is the largest health inequity in the world; 99 per cent of maternal deaths occur in developing countries and half of them in Africa. Nigeria is one of the six countries that contribute to half of maternal deaths worldwide. Fortunately, the vast majority of maternal and newborn deaths can be prevented with proven interventions to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted and every birth is safe.
As part of this effort, the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) Country Office in Abuja (Nigeria) would like to recruit a Maternal Health Adviser to serve as Senior Adviser on Millennium Development Goal 5 Millennium Development Goal 5 (MDG5) to the H4 (the four UN agencies (UNFPA, UNICEF, WHO, the World Bank), the country and the Ministry of Health. S/he will provide policy and strategic direction and technical advisory support for the implementation of initiatives related to family planning, human resources for maternal health, and in particular midwifery, and Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC), and community involvement and participation for the reduction of maternal mortality . S/he will foster effective coordination around MDG5 between government and civil society partners. This post will be particularly strategic as to the H4 to achieve the MDG5.
Organizational Setting
The Maternal Health Adviser reports to the UNFPA Representative in Nigeria.
Working closely with national partners, UNFPA, WHO, UNICEF and The World Bank colleagues in Nigeria, Africa Region and Technical Division, the Maternal Health Advisor will work within an integrated, coordinated, and systems strengthening approach which is fundamental to UNFPA’s overall strategy and is part of the UNFPA Nigeria Country Office Team.

Qualification and Experience:
• Health professional with postgraduate degree in public health required.
• Ten years of professional experience, including field experience and increasing responsibility in the area of international development including public health, preferably reproductive / maternal health
• Recognized expertise in providing technical advisory role
• Strong ability to produce demonstrable results
• Demonstrated ability to network with partners (governments, academics, civil society) and the development community for evidence-based advocacy, coordination and resource mobilization.
• Familiarity with the work of the UN system and partners specifically related to maternal health.
• Fluency in English is required; working knowledge of French is desirable.
